Human Trafficking Is A Modern Day Form Of Slavery

Do you know what human trafficking is? Well, human trafficking is just another name for modern slavery. Different medias, like television shows and movies, make it look like human trafficking only happens in foreign countries or to foreign citizens. That however, is dangerously untrue. It is one of the biggest crime industries in America, behind drug and arms dealing. It’s happening right in our backyard, human trafficking is extremely prevalent in big American cities and states with international borders and national highways. â€Å"Sex Trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act is under the age of 18 (5-stones).† 80†¦show more content†¦Labor trafficking is much harder to identify and is not reported on, as much as sex trafficking, because outside people will think that the workers are paid and will dismiss them. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean that it occurs less than sex trafficking. On the contrary, global estimate of labor trafficking cases are higher than the estimate of sex trafficking. The United States has many different laws to prevent labor trafficking. For example, children under eighteen have to have a working permit, signed by their parents, to work. There is an unfortunate misconception that comes with the subject of human trafficking. The misconception is that all victims of human trafficking are foreign women. Though it is true that most cases consist of women and children, 20 percent of cases are men and it is horrible to forget them. There are just as many United States citizens trafficked as there are foreign citizens. The most vulnerable citizens from the states are the homeless teens that ran away from a physically or sexually abusive family. â€Å"One in three runaways will be lured toward ‘prostitution’ within 48 hours of leaving home (5-stones).† The runaways are scared and hungry, and many of them would be mentally and physically scarred. Andrei Serban educating Prosperos Essay Example For Students

Andrei Serban: educating Prosperos Essay Andrei Serban, looking remarkably youthful at 50 in his black jeans and crewneck sweater, darts out of his office at Columbia University, where a year-and-a-half ago he was hired as head of the Oscar Hammerstein Center for Theatre Arts. Thin, edgy, sporting a neat beard and shaggy brown hair, the Romanian-born director motions to a bright-eyed graduate student and they disappear behind his door for a quick conference. Minutes later, Serban swoops out and motions to his next visitor. To those familiar with the marginalized, tradition-bound Columbia theatre program that seemed gripped by rigor mortis though much of the 1970s and 80s, Serbans energetic presence signals important changes. For this Ivy League institutions commitment to the arts over the past couple of decades was never so neatly symbolized as when the university razed the campus theatre to make way for a state-of-the-art law school without ever building a new performance venue. Why would a critically acclaimed director who has worked with an inspiring range of international artists from innovative experimental performers to opera companies to Japanese mastersaccept a position at an institution with such a track record? Serban sips his coffee, settles awkwardly into his chair in his bright, recently repainted office and takes an uncharacteristically long pause: The time has come to transmit my experiences in the theatre and my understanding to the younger generation, for two reasons: one, to pass those things on; and two, for myself to clarify these directions. Serbans arrival was one in a series of fortuitous hirings that injected new life into the sixth floor of stodgy Dodge Hall, the building that also houses Columbias graduate writing, film and music programs. First, Peter Smith was named dean of the school of arts six years ago; he hired Arnold Aronson to chair the graduate theatre division. Together they pursued Serban, hoping he could do for their theatre program what he has done so eloquently for classical drama since the 1970s and for opera since the 1980s rejuvenate the moribund. Serbans mandate was to create a graduate MFA acting program from scratch and reclaim or develop a venue in which the students can study and perform and to do it, not incidentally, at a financially strapped institution in a city where space is at a premium. Asked to explain his program and teaching philosophy, Serbans body recoils and flinches, conveying reluctance to confront the seemingly impossible task of explaining what hes trying to teach his first group of graduate actors. There is no syllabus for his classes or reading lists. The curriculum is extremely different from that of a more traditional theatre program, he begins haltingly in his accented English. What we are trying to do is to not necessarily make actors come out of the school to have a sure way to Broadway or television or Hollywood, but to really give actors the materials that will open them up to their skill as actors. Serban assets that he wants the 16 acting recruits to be trained experimentally, learning by voic ing, moving, doingnot talking or theorizing about acting. Ironically, Serbans solution seems so obvious that his radically different methods could be labeled almostwell, conservative. Drawing on the historical tradition of apprenticeship and collaboration on classics of dramatic literature, the acting students first-year texts are the extant Greek tragedies. The actors find themselves immersed in larger-than-life materialand they receive lots of help. Each is assigned to a director, a dramaturg and a new translation or adaptation of Greek text created by a student playwright. Twenty such ensembles share the vast black-box laboratory space in a refurbished basement across Broadway from Dodge Hall. Each group also gets rehearsal time, use of stock rehearsal props and modular furniture, and a date to present their research to their colleagues. The space is purposefully a place of exploration no seats and no sets. .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf , .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf .postImageUrl , .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf , .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf:hover , .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf:visited , .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf:active { border:0!important; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf:active , .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9ea2d795299c60a92ab225d0012bbcaf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Persians': twisted history and radical chic EssaySerban believes that taking voice or movement without an outlet to explore the techniques turns theatre training into a mindless acquisition of tools and styles. Therefore, at Columbia all body and voice work including courses in Kathikali dance and Indian chanting are acquired with a purpose: to be put to use in the Greek projects. They must use techniques if it suits them and then discard them. However, he adamantly refuses to let his students become prisoners of style, letting one technique become a crutch or habit. That this training, which seems so sensible, is so revolutionary, suggests why Serbans view of American training programs as stale and tired has some validity. Next semester the actors tackle Greek and Roman comedy, using Aristophanes and Plautine texts as excuses to do mask and clowning work. Serbans subversion begins to make sense: We start with the most difficult material. This process turns out to be the opposite of Serbans own experience training to be a director in Bucharest. That traditional program began with the director staging fundamental scene worktwo-character scenes, three-character scenes, one act of a play building blocks to the assumption of a craft. Serban admits without hesitation that he wants to train artists, not craftspeople. His voice intensifies and his accented emphasis on the verb is gains an insistent snake-like hiss: To me, what is much more important is the question, what is a director? What is theatre? What is an actor? Serban sums it up: This is a laboratory for the investigation of what is the nature of theatre. Why are we doing theatre at all? That is the root question we are examining here, rather than giving the pill of how to go to Broadway. Obviously it is too early to predict results, but memories of Serbans famous Greek Trilogy suggest potential in his plan. That production at La Mama ETC in New York in the mid-1970s (revived in the 1980s) combined Medea, Trojan Women and Electra, fluidly staged in separate environments with the populous cast speaking a classical creole composed of Greek, Latin and nonsense words. Coincidentally, Serban has hired his Electra and frequent acting collaborator, Priscilla Smith, to teach acting and voice at Columbia. Together they hope eventually to create a vital theatre energy that serves as a magnet in upper Manhattan, attracting performers and students from all over the worlda setup perhaps modeled on that of his one-time teacher, Peter Brook. It is from Brook that Serbans infamous bamboo-pole exercises for actors originated. (Most students and faculty just call it stick work.) Serban never mentions this pervasive technique during our initial interview, but pressed later for details suggests that the eight-foot poles are tools that help actors find the transcendent moment. He calls them magic wands used as weapons to spur performers to a confrontation with themselves. Serban, it seems, is intent on educating Prosperos, not Calibans. Although Aronson and Serban have gathered an impressive staff (including Smith, director Anne Bogart, playwright Romulus Linney, designers Marjorie Bradley Kellogg and Robin Wagner, and critics such as Michael Feingold, Elinor Fuchs, James Leverett and Linda Winer), the real question is whether Columbia can survive Serban. With the schedule and stamina of a jet plane, he returns frequently to Europe, even mid-semester, as he did this fall to direct Placido Domingo in The Tales of Hoffman in Vienna. He also is the artistic director of the Romanian National Theatre, a subsidized institution that employs a staff of 500. Nevertheless, he appears committed to making the Morningside Heights campus a weigh station, an island of theatrical energy amid the tempests of tradition that he views as American theatre trainings greatest enemy.

The Devil Sang free essay sample

An essay on the progression of morality as an instantaneous rather than gradual process. This is an essay about the progression of morality. The author argues that morality progresses in human beings in one drastic, breathtaking moment, rather than gradually. This is an anecdotal, subjective view of the progression of morality. To be truly human is to experience the universal struggle between good and evil. During early childhood, one is entirely unaware of what is good and what is bad. One only knows what actions reap rewards and what actions provoke punishments. There comes a time in everyones life when he or she discovers morals, and that time is the beginning of being truly human. That time is not a gradual shift; it is a moment, and a defining one in everyones life though it may not seem to be that important at the time. Because that moment is mostly a strange chill on the back of ones neck after doing something evil, or a light, airy feeling of joy at having done something benevolent, it is not an especially extraordinary moment. We will write a custom essay sample on The Devil Sang or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It is only with hindsight that the true meaning of that chill or that joy may be gleaned. ADAM, EVE, AND THE SERPENT BY ELAINE PAGELS free essay sample

Politics works within a certain ideological framework. A political structure is based upon a particular ideology. Such a case can be considered more or less parallel with that of religion, wherein individuals are encouraged, if not coerced, to subscribe to a certain religious belief. Christianity is a religious doctrine that has long been subject to both physical and ideological dispute. In Adam, Eve, and the Serpent by Elaine Pagels, the developments in Christian theology was explored in its first five centuries. Through the literatures historical account of the evolution of Christianity, several issues on ecclesiastical politics came up along with corresponding political theories (Pagels). The ideological influence somehow embodies the umbrella theme of Adam, Eve, and the Serpent in the sense that the issues on religion within the book all boils down to a goal of eventual subscription to Christianity. Predictably, the matter of original sin is at the top of the list, being the turning point of the gist in the first book of the Bible. We will write a custom essay sample on ADAM, EVE, AND THE SERPENT BY ELAINE PAGELS or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Not unlike any ideology, the theory of â€Å"original sin† as presented by Augustine, a belief that influenced past generations and is still present today,   proved to be enforcing to the political and psychological thinking of Christians and non-Christians alike, therefore creating a need for establishing both a Christian state and state-supported church (Pagels). This thus becomes a preliminary issue that indirectly subsumes the others under its wing. Here, Louis Althussers theory on the ideological state apparatus or ISA is rather applicable. According to Althusser, the ideological state apparatus is a method of domination which, unlike the repressive state apparatus, does not employ force but instead works based on a particular ideology. In Adam, Eve, and the Serpent, the ideology is Christianity, wherein pagans and Jews alike are induced to become advocates of the religious belief. Nevertheless, as political power or pure power for that matter only exists when one party dominates another, the ideological state apparatus similarly functions with a repressive state apparatus, one which uses force, although not simultaneously. This can be explained by the persecution of Christians. The persecution, as a repressive state apparatus, was one of the reasons that many Christians accepted the institutionalized structure and in effect, supervision of each group was easily done as well as instructing and disciplining its members. By the second century, there was an attempt of turning Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount into an ethical imperative that separated Christians from paganistic influence (and sometimes opposed it) and strengthened further the political structure of the institutionalized church. In the aforementioned statements, another political framework surfaces, being that the Christian institution is bound to face inevitable opposition. In such disposition of the church can be applied the conflict theory, a sort of political strategy that breeds internal solidarity through conflict with outside elements. This theory may also be applied in an absolute or general sense, as in the concept of good and evil, wherein the good builds solidarity by fighting the forces of evil from the outside. The theory might also be found applicable on the differences in religious belief between the Christians and the Romans, where Roman gods, which pagan skeptics derided as â€Å"naà ¯ve and foolish illusions,† were regarded as â€Å"real and dangerous adversaries† for Christ’s followers. The theories of dominance thus surface once more with this impending threat, as they form the strategy of attracting more Christian advocates and consequently opposing the pagan side. Other issues in the book such as sexuality and marriage also fall under this umbrella theme, for adherents as well as non-adherents are encouraged and influenced to subscribe to the Christian beliefs regarding such matters, despite conflicting traditions that seem to be loopholes in both sides strategies. For instance, as stated in Pagel’s book, Jews, Romans and pagans criticize each other’s ideologies and practices about sexuality and marriage which they found ridiculous or peculiar. Jewish customs, such as circumcision and polygamous marriage, had long been criticized by Romans and Babylonians, just as Jews condemn pagan sexual habits. These differences and clashes among various religious ideologies were already prevalent even before Jesus’ day and still exist in the present age. Christianity also works this way however based from Jesus’ moral enforced by its highly institutionalized political structure. To date, there are over 2 million Christians around the world and many are still subscribing to its ideologies. Some if not all ecclesiastical ideologies strive to best one another in the field of religion, in the same way that oppositions exist between different political ideologies, as was written and proven by history and exhibited in the modern generation, especially now that more and more religious ideologies, some of them more or less similar to one another, continue to emerge. Thus, not unlike in the political arena, the methods of domination exist. Work Cited: Pagels, Elaine. Adam, Eve, and the Serpent. 1988. April 10, 2007.

Cultivation Theory Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Cultivation Theory - Term Paper Example It is one of the social theories of mass communication that postulate a kind of relationship between the mass communication and social changes recorded in the community (Aggarwal & Gupta, 2001, p.35). The media reports that appear to have been influenced in some way will give an image that is not typical of the real scenario. For instance, a series of television shows on sexual immorality in a given city may provide a negative image of the city to the public. A series of reports on the corrupt acts by a given company definitely reduces the reputation of the organization among the public. On the other hand, providing only the positive aspects of a given issue by the media houses is also likely to provide a false positive image on the public concerning this issue. The best approach is then to provide balanced and uninfluenced reports by the media houses. Using the skills required in public relations will enable the media houses to provide balanced information that is necessary for deve loping a true picture. Both the negative and positive aspects of a concept should be focused as they occur in the real setting. Thesis Statement Based on the Cultivation Theory, the reports by the media houses can create images on the public that are not typical of the real situation. ... The developments that were put into the theory during this original spot are also examined as well as the current application of the theory in the field of mass communication. Origin of Cultivation Theory The Cultivation theory, also known as the cultivation hypothesis or the cultivation analysis can be traced back to the 1960s and attributed to the research by Professor George Gerbner of Annenberg School of Communication, Pennsylvania University. He focused on the effects of different television programs on the perception of a given concept in a given society (Erlandson, Williams & Telles, 2009). The research project that was referred to as â€Å"Cultural Indicators† investigated into the impacts of media operation on the social life of the public. An analysis of the contents of television programs and their effects on the public led to a generalization of the theory that how the society perceive the reality of a concept is greatly influenced by the programs and reports provi ded by television. The theory developed in 1967 is ‘based on the assumption that mass media have subtle effects on audiences who unknowingly absorb the dominant symbols, images, and messages of the media’ (Aggarwal & Gupta, 2001, p.35). In his investigations, Gerbner divided the audiences under the study into three distinct groups based on the duration that the individuals spent while watching television. He found out that even those who spent long periods watching TV programs were not immediately influenced by the programs. However, it was observed that this long exposure to television broadcasts had long-term effect on the individual perception of reality. The individuals tend to be inclined towards the models provided by the

Lets go to the origin of logistics and its evolution to the concept of Supply Chain Management. Although broadly defined in some dictionaries. The definition of the CNL (Council of Logistics Management) differs slightly: Logistics is that part of the supply chain process that plans , implement and controls the efficient , effective flow and storage of goods, services and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption in order to meet customers requirements. Logistics has its origins in the armies. Its presented successively as part of military operations that the group which coherent in arms champagne live, move and fight in the best conditions of efficiency to become the area is by all problems relating to supply of all natures, in their delivery and for their distribution through base and transit operations. According to Chopra, Sunil and Peter Meindl(2004). Supply Chain Consist of allparties involved, directly or indirectly, in fulfilling a customer request. The Supply Chain not only includes the manufacturer and suppliers, but organization, such as manufacturer, the supply chain includes all functions involved in receiving and filling a customer request.Theese functionsinclude, but are not limited to, new product development, marketing, operations, distribution, finance and customer service. CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 INTRODUCTION This literature review is written about Supply Chain Management. The research for this piece of work is based on how organizations put into operation an effective Supply Chain Management. Throughout this literature review, i will demonstrate knowledge of Supply Chain Management ; Explain the need to manage a Supply Chain Management and describe the benefit of doing so. I will also look at the objectives and list fundamental elements of Supply Chain Management and examinate possible issues on Supply Chain Management. Information about this piece of work are collected from various sources such as books and online journals Modules lectures listed after: Ronald H. Ballou in Business logistics/supply chain management 5th ed Martin Christopher logistics and supply chain management 3rd ed Gerard Baglin management industriel et logistique 4th ed A case study of Ceramic HG. Willian. J. Stevenson Operation Management Donald Waters Supply Chain Management an introduction to Logistics 2nd ed Keywords: Supply Chain Management: The context of continuous evolution is still more advance level of competition, the success of an enterprise is not only the management of core activities but also depends on relationships and supply management. Thus, upstream and downstream of the SCM, a company needs to manage relationships with customers and suppliers. Ordinarily, the increasing trend of outsourcing maintains this requirement. The Supply chain is the organization that provides(in human beings, organizations ). SCM (Supply Chain Management) is in charge for organizing the supply by the managing of flows in the context of the company. The basic principle of SCM is that gets a worse result by optimizing every element of the chain, rather than optimizing the overall chain (the sum of the optima of each element of the chain is less than the global optimum ) A product is never made throughout by the same company. Many suppliers, intermediates and subcontractors implicated in different phases of product realization. Traditionally, communication between stakeholders is minimized. To ensure hazards, each form of stocks more or less important, expensive( Gerard Baglin 2005)The slightest error restraints the flow and interrupts the chain which is penalized. Supply Chain Management wants to ensure the overall fluidity while ensuring greater flexibility. It provides the shift from production-oriented product to a customer-centric-production(Olivier Bruel 2005 ). The Need for Supply Chain Management: The essence of supply chain is to maximise value and reduce total cost across the entire trading process through focusing on speed and the certainty of response to the market (Tom McGuffog). Since companies improves toward virtual, real-time organizational structures, a new set of Supply Chain Management capabilities will come into sight, and that permits the user to react rapidly to the market demand. Due to globalization, Supply Chain Management has turn out to be a means for companies to compete efficiently at local as well as global scale. It became a fundamental element for companies, especially when it comes to deliver services at a competitive cost and high quality. Now days, product and services have no value unless they are in the possession of the customer when (time) and where (place) they wish to consume them Ronald H. Ballou (1999; p13) . According to William.J. Stevenson( 2008 ) the needs for Supply Chain Management are these followings ? Developing operations Increasing levels of outsourcing Increasing transportation costs Competitive pressures Increasing globalization Increasing importance of e-commerce Complexity of supply chains Managing inventories As stated before, Supply chain management creates an efficient and integrated company. It plays considerable roles when it comes to reduction of costs and time by channelizing the products into appropriate distribution channels in order to enable the goods to reach the end consumers on time. Those above are not the only benefit of supply chain management. William J. Stevenson identified benefits of SCM as follow: Lower inventories Higher productivity Greater agility Shorter lead times Higher profits Greater customer loyalty Integrates separate organizations into a cohesive operating system. Elements of Supply Chain Management: There are three types of Supply Chain Management elements, namely: Strategic Tactical Operational Issues on Supply Chain Management: According to TMG ( Transportation Management Group Inc ) article published the 24 Jan-2000. Nowadays, the Supply Chain Management world, companies are required to focus on developing the necessary capabilities to address key business issues. Getting product from the vendor to the shelf to fulfil consumer demand has been identified as one of the critical business issues. To address this issue, organizations must center on building a flow management capability. As an initiative to support this capability, companies need to optimize their distribution network to enable merchandise flow. This optimized distribution network must also support key changes associated with the new merchandise flow strategies. The optimized distribution network must support product assortments, order practices, replenishment methods, replenishment quantities, increase in imports if applicable, and new store formats that will require stores operating at much lower inventory levels than today. A preliminary analysis of existing Supply Chain Operating models indicate that there are significant opportunities to rationalize current distribution center networks by exploring new flow path options. These alternatives are driven by many factors. The following are high level attributes and the issues that must be addressed with each of them. The mains issues on Supply Chain Management retained are these followings: Customer Demands Cost Issues Consolidation/Partnering Globalization Technology Government Regulatory Agencies Throughout my research we will detail each of them. 1.1 Supply Chain Management: Supply Chain Management, SCM, defines the control of the supply chain from the first supplier to end customer. Supply Chain Management aims to assess as accurately as the needs, availability and capacity of each link in the supply chain and manufacturing, to better synchronize and serve customers in the best possible conditions. Basically we can conclude that the SCM Supply Chain Management helps improve the flow and time while controlling costs. http://rmdonovan.web6.hubspot.com/Portals/61797/images/image002.gif According to 2011 R. Michael Donovan Co Figure SC-2 The standard manufacturing supply chain shows the traditional flow of information and materials to and from the customers and the suppliers through the company. The processes within the supply chain typically have a strong correlation to the traditional silo organizational functions within a manufacturing company, including sales, engineering, manufacturing, distribution, and accounting. The business process flows across an organization, but communication, accountability, and reward systems flow vertically. This organizational and process contradiction often impedes supply chain effectiveness. ( Hanfield,2002, p.9) that supply chain can see in two angles, internal one for the company and external for the supplier .A supplier for this company has his own set of suppliers that provide input. Supply Chain are essentially a series of linked suppliers and customers until products reach the ultimate customer. In the world Supply Chain Management, we have three words the first word is Supply ; the second one Chain and the third one Management. Definition of Management The fact is that different supply chain in every day world exist wether they are managed or not. If one of the organization will actively implement any of supply chain management concepts explained further on in the thesis, the supply chain as a phenomenon of business will still exist but will probably not act in a rational, coordinated way. Supply chain management therefore requires active management efforts by the organisations within the supply chain. What is an organisation? Lipovec 1987, p35) defines organization as the composition of relationships between people, who by relationships become members of a formed social unit. Organisation ensure the existence and specific characteristics of the social unit and rational achievement of goals. According to Rozman(2000, p15) there are 3 process in a organisation assuring rational achievement of goals: organization process, coordination process, and decision making process. The organisational process are defined as goal oriented processes of ensuring the rationality The Way Spain Was by Neruda: Analysis The Way Spain Was by Neruda: Analysis The Way Spain Was is in the poetic collection Third Residence, which Neruda had written when he was a member of the Communist Party of the Chile. He is very much concerned about the common people of the land. Although his mind is burdened with seething social issues, he spoke as simply as possible to communicate his sentiments to the public. He recounts with passion the repeated suffering recorded in the history of Spain. How unto crying out, unto the very soul I live your barren soil and your rough bread, your stricken people! How in the depths of me grows the lost flowers of your villages, timeless, impossible to budge, your tracts of minerals bulging like oldsters under the moon, devoured by an imbecile god. The poet brings out the harsh realities of life through various images. Fresh bloom of life that cannot be found, the lost flower of your villages continues to clamour in his mind. He is enraged that an idiot like god is punishing the land that he loves. Through the deep love for Chile he begins to consider Spain as his motherland. When he witnessed the ruins of Machuchu Pichchu, his love for the land became more intense. His mourning for the Spains glorious past is evident in the words our stricken people. Silence and isolation are repeated and cries of Taut and dry Spain, this phrase shows the core of his sensibility and the memories of war reminds him of the dull and loud sound of drums. In spite of the fertility of Spain the poet is more concerned about the inhabited of the land affected by the civil war and dictatorship. He is very much conscious of the Spanish soil aged by years of sunlight and of regions invades by various races. your harsh wine and your sweet wine. Your violent and delicate vineyards. Stone of the sun, pure among territories, Neruda also mourns for his best friend Garcia Lorca and Miguel Hernandez, who died in the Spanish civil war. Spain veined with bloods and metals, blue and victorious, this clearly shows the history of king discoverers and the tragedy of civil war which made him Republican and he uses his poetry as a weapon to fight against the violence. The ordinary people of the society i.e, the common people are suppressed and their lifes plight is showcased clearly in the line proletariat of petals and bullets/ alone alive, somnolent, resounding. The people of rich fertile land are depended on their daily labours; their life is beautiful with the horror of war in it. Opposition of ideas can be seen in the words sweet and harsh, in violent and delicate in petals and bullets these words confirms that Neruda is fighting against the suppression of proletariat He writes about a poor, but beautiful Spain, historically rich and glorious in the past, crushed and destroyed in the present. It is a fact that Pablo Neruda openly reacted to the contemporary political events in Spain and his own country that made him summaries his own life as follows: I have had to fight and struggle, love and sign. I have had to see the breaking world, the triumph and the defeat. I tasted the bread and the blood. What more can a poet want? And all the alternatives, from the songs to the kisses, from the solitude to the people, exist in my poetry, participate in it, because I have lives for my poetry, and my poetry has sustained me. Intense feeling for the colonised people is very much seen along with the reaction to the social and political events in his mother country. Discoverers of Chile is taken from Canto General, Nerudas the most important work. First, it was conceived as Canto General of Chile and later became the general song of America, i.e., Canto General. The new practice of addressing to an audience, communicating with a group of people becomes more specific in Canto General, a collection of poems that are often called epic poems of Chile. Published in 1950 and divided into fifteen sections, these poems tell the tale of Latin American people. Songs of Canto General were composed over twelve years, which are also considered years of militant Neruda. Many sections of Canto General are dedicated to workers and peasants whose homes and experiences the poet had shared so many times. While reading these poems one feels that these are the people who are lending their voice to his poetry. Through these poems Neruda explains how his people were oppressed and exploited first by the conquerors and then by the dictators, the collection ends with an autobiographical account of him. Neruda celebrates the mysteries of South America, its flora and fauna, and gazes with wonder at an antique civilisation that really belongs to pre-Columbian days. Discoverers of Chile is taken from Canto General, Nerudas the most essential work. To begin with, it was considered as Canto General of Chile and later turned into the general melody of America, i.e., Canto General. The new routine of tending to a crowd of people, speaking with a gathering of individuals turns out to be more particular in Canto General, an accumulation of lyrics that are regularly called epic sonnets of Chile. Distributed in 1950 and isolated into fifteen segments, these ballads tell the story of Latin American individuals. Tunes of Canto General were made more than twelve years, which are additionally considered years of aggressor Neruda. Many segments of Canto General are devoted to laborers and workers whose homes and encounters the writer had shared such a variety of times. While perusing these lyrics one feels that these are the general population who are loaning their voice to his verse. Through these lyrics Neruda clarifies how his kin were persecuted and abus ed first by the winners and afterward by the despots, the gathering closes with a personal record of him. Neruda praises the riddles of South America, its greenery, and looks with marvel at an antique civilisation that truly has a place with pre-Columbian day In the first line poet discovers the history of the invaders, who they are and from where they come? The word à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã… ¾northà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã… ¸ indicates European country mainly the Spain. The Spanish force entered Chile under the commanding ship of Almagro (in some translation instead of Almagro, pronoun he is used, he can be a suggestive of Pedro de Valdivia, who followed the route of Diego de Almagro in 1541 and established the colony at Santiago). He may also indicate any or all of the conquerors of Chile. The Conquers entered into the land with gunshots. The poet calls his country as my thin country. The strong forces suppressed the small country Chile which suffered in silence. From the north Almagro brought his crushed ember: And over the territory, between explosion and sunset The poet uses various images to stress his point of suppression of the country like the Spaniard meeting with his dry figure; shadows of thorn and coal covering it with mysterious kisses. Again, he personifies Chile as an old man with a white beard, which is actually the foam from the sea. It is a veiled suggestion that his people couldnt hold out for a long period against the powerful invaders and so were compelled to surrender, to merge their own history and culture with that of their colonial masters. Neruda admits that the Spaniard did succeed in conquering his undiscovered territory that lay beyond the seas and in ruling over the angry and yellow-coloured people of his land. They also succeeded in giving birth to a new civilisation that slowly and surely supplanted the old one of the native Indians like dropping the excrement (dung) by a sea-eagle that was hovering and circling above the sky. Neruda starts with the history of the Spanish settlers in Chile, enamoured as they were by tales of richness and of wealth.   Thus, we have a land where coal covers it with mysterious kisses and Gold burns, Silver illuminates. The imagery emanates with light and colour contrasted by shades of darkness that only emphasises the relationship between   the colonisers and the Indian people the vanquished, and again Chiles intrinsic relationship with Spain. It is continuous Eurocentric history that is only displaced by the myth of creation, probably Amerindian, where the eagle drops a strip of land in the sea and a country is born. Neruda describes his country in its actual physical form, in simple phrase such as my thin country and silence lies in its long line. This contains an indirect suggestion that the people could not hold out against the powerful invaders and so were compelled to merge their own history and culture with that of the masters. The sea appears as a descri ptive factors and as a person whose marine beard all lifes follows. Neruda begins with the historical backdrop of the Spanish pilgrims in Chile, captivated as they were by stories of lavishness and of riches. In this manner, we have a land where coal covers it with mysterious kisses and Gold burns , Silver illuminates . The symbolism radiates with light and shading differentiated by shades of dimness that lone accentuates the connection between the colonizers and the Indian individuals the vanquished, and again Chiles characteristic association with Spain. It is persistent Eurocentric history that is just uprooted by the myth of creation, likely Amerindian, where the hawk drops a segment of land in the ocean and a nation is conceived. Neruda portrays his nation in its real physical frame, in basic expression, for example, my thin country and silence lies in its long line. This contains an aberrant recommendation that the general population couldnt hold out against the effective intruders as were constrained to consolidate their own history and cultur e with that of the experts. The ocean shows up as distinct components and as a man whose marine beard all lifes takes after. Discovered in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham, Macchu Picchu is an Inca stronghold in the Peruvian Andes near the modern city of Cuzco. Nothing is known of its history and it appears that it was never discovered by the Spanish Conquistadors. Bingham himself believed that the site was the last refuge of the Incas from the invading Spanish. In The Heights of Macchu Picchu, The poet meanders through the world as a empty net assembling nothing from the world. He dives his hand into the earth and finds the sulfurous peace of the world and its spent human springtime. Neruda asks what is the indestructible, the perpetual, life on the planet. The concentration shifts from the writer himself as he battles however the world and he sees that the whole world is in a comparable circumstance. The artist depicts the lives of individuals on the planet as they battle with living. Every day people die their little deaths. many deaths comes to each Every day a little death. He climbs to Macchu Picchu as he climbs he gains an insight into the history of the place. The stellar void of the final steps and the vertiginous spiralling road He thinks about the general population who lived there once. Presently the place is unfilled there is nobody in the land. He ponders who construct the city there whose remains are still there. He feels the vacancy, Today the vacant air does not sob anymore. Neruda addresses the lost Incas of Peru: you tumbled as in pre-winter to a solitary passing. He says that they live on in the stones of Macchu Picchu. Once the land is possessed by individuals yet now the land is vacant with its remnants. The land can be the casualty of misuse of colonizers. He feels for the grand past of the nation. He asks where is the man? among the uncovered stones. Did Macchu Picchu construct itself? Neruda needs to think about the general population who had once strolled the roads. He dives his hand into the earth a moment time and finds Man. At the point when the excited condor beats my sanctuaries I dont see the quick animal. Instead, I see the man of old. Now Neruda loses all association with his European past; he is presently an American and his family relationship is with its indigenous individuals. Neruda addresses the local people groups, specifically the workers, weavers, bricklayers, and so forth. He requests that they Ascend to be conceived with me, my sibling. Neruda feels his own otherworldly resurrection and a resurrection of the dead individuals of the Americas. The poem ends: Cling to my body like magnets Hasten to my veins and to my mouth Speak through my words and my blood. Nerudas Elementary Odes are also a mastery of expression and imagery where he raises useful but mundane objects to sublime heights. His poetry cultivates simplicity of language and simplicity of technique; and his purpose is to strip his writings of any distorted or complex factors that may impede the understanding of the reader. His tone is optimistic and positive, and Ode to the Tomato is a wonderful example of a poem that presents a pictorial description of a salad making to which a reader can add the more profound meaning culled from an American culture. In the poem Neruda uses the image of tomato as a symbol of coloniser. This is very clearly seen in the lines, The street drowns in tomato: noon summar, light breaks in two tomato halves and the street run with juice. Here the poet uses the tomato to represent the invasion of Spanish and Portuguese colonial in South America. Tomato is the one of the major crops in Spain. So the poet indirectly symbolizes the Spanish people with tomato. And that the tomato spread all over the streets of Chile like the juice. When cut, the two/tomato/halves looks like the two hemispheres to which Chile and Spain belong, the only difference being that it is summer in Chile in December (as it belongs to the Southern Hemisphere) and winter in Spain (as it belongs to the Northern Hemisphere). The coloniser doesnt need any permission to enter or occupy the land. That has been in the lines, the tomato cuts loose, invades kitchens South America is conquered, suppressed, exploited by the colonialism. The coloniser of Chile (Spanish people) enters into the kitchen of Chile peoples house and occupies their places without any proper permission from them. Each line of this poem is unusually short, containing no more than one to four words. The line structure causes the reader to look at the next and then the next line to complete the action that has begun, of preparation of the salad that is an essential part of the midday meal in both South American and European countries, especially Spain. Thus, Neruda starts with the season when the tomatoes fill the stalls of vegetables vendors and their colour, though not mentioned, instantly captures the attention. The two tomato halves are also reminiscent   of the two hemispheres to which the countries Chile and Spain belong. It is not until the word December appears that we realise that the summer the poet is speaking about is of course one and the same in Southern hemisphere. The fact that the tomato breaks its bounds and invades/kitchens remains us of another takeover of their lands and their culture by the Spanish colonisers who came in the wake of Columbus. Neruda brings the picture of culinary delight to emphasize the union of two cultures. The Spanish people, who invaded Chile, sustained a relationship through marriage and by which there formed a mixture of culture of two races- the American (Red) Indians and the Europeans (Whites). This union is poetically explained in the lines: beds cheerfully with the blonde onion, and to celebrate oil the filial essence of the olive tree lets itself fall over its gapping hemispheres, the pimento adds its fragrance, salt its magnetism- The process of cooking aromatic salad mentioned in the poem indirectly speaks about the mixing of one culture with the other. The line we have the days wedding suggests the image of colonisation. Of course, the salads bowl with its olive and pimentos also suggests a cheerful lending of Chilean and Spanish culture. In fact, the melting-pot culture of America has now been replaced by the concept of the salad bowl where all the colours can mix without any losing their original shape, form, individuality and identity. Neruda races ahead to the meal that beckons with its aromas. There is immediacy when he writes, its time! Lets go! there is celebration and joy in this meal. the festival/or ardent colour/and all-embracing freshness. It is a veritable joining of cultures, at least through the common denominator of food. Spanish colonization over Chile can be characterized as pilgrim colonization, wherein the colonizers blend with the colonized and the division between the two societies is obscured. The conquistadors took it on themselves to be a piece of the foundation and not disparage the status of the colonized. They shared culture, dialect and wound up noticeably one with the occupants of their settlement. This is one reason why Nerudas verse does not contain any contempt towards Spain. This is especially apparent in the words like a goodly majesty, we have the days / wedding. There is no threatening vibe towards the colonizers of any sort. Neruda considers himself to be an epitome of the Spanish culture, as the writer of damaged human nobility who brings alive a landmass fate and dreams According to Jaime Alazraki, Neruda is not simply chronicling verifiable occasions but rather re-translating them with an unmistakable standpoint of history. Hes glancing back at American pre-history and analyzi ng the lands rich, normal legacy. Postcolonial literature often focuses on the suppression, oppression, identity crisis, alienation, and cultural identity etc, faced by the natives of the colonised land. But the poems of Neruda present the theme of post colonialism in a different way, here though the atrocities of colonisers are portrayed he never hates them, instead celebrates the mingling of culture. The Way Spain Was records the sufferings of people recorded in the history of Spain as a colony through many harsh images. The land blessed with natures bounty was destroyed in the civil war. He traces the history of Spain the present invaders were once invaded by many. Through many opposing images the horror of war and the plight of the affected people are portrayed effectively. Discoverers of Chile brings out the pain of suppressed people under the rule of dictators. As a historian he discovers the past glory of the thin country and also its invaders. Silent sufferings of the native people and how they are compelled to merge culturally with the invaders are resented in this short poem in an emphatic manner. In The Heights of Macchu Picchu though he describes the beauty of the landscape he is in search of the lost identity and the glorious past of the place. Now there is no man and he investigates where he has gone? The ruins found in the place give a hint to the colonial invasion. In the poem Ode to The Tomatoes his love for the Spanish and Chilean collaboration is very much evident when he tells about the process of cooking salads. As he aromatically describes the mingling of different ingredients in the preparation of salad, his love for the mixed culture and the coloniser can be clearly seen.

Multinational organizations

Culture refers to the way of life that is defined by the behaviour, knowledge, and beliefs throughout the lives of people. It includes the way we think, our behaviour, and life which are shaped by the political, economic, and historical conditions prevailing in a particular geographical region. . A case study of Intel Corporation Expansion into China Intel Corporation is an establishment of the United States of America. It has a subsidiary in China. The set up of the plant in China wasn’t without challenges.Part of the problem included the Chinese educational system which wasn't up to par with the American university system, the home of parent company. Therefore, students hired by Intel in China lacked the high level expertise required. Language barriers were another challenge since people of China speak Chinese language and their form writing is different from that in America. Other cultural barriers included social inequalities and jealous, gender insensitivities, style of d ress, mode of communication, national pride, religious belief and local customs. Traditionally, filial piety and families are priorities. Thus outside organizations have great difficulty cultivating loyalty. Chinese are known to undermine others of lower class. To synchronise the level of expertise between the American employees and the Chinese employees, Intel Corporation sent the Chinese employees to America for further training. It also developed a policy that encouraged constructive confrontation, where employees would criticize their colleagues' and managers' ideas. The purpose of the policy was to allow constructive resolution rather than employees undermining each other during disagreements. Thus, employees had to prepare sufficient data to oppose a given decision before a scheduled date of implementation. Since confrontation alone cannot resolve all matters, a supplementing mechanism was put in place to implementing decisions in case disagreement persisted. Intel also promotes one-on-one consultations between managers and employees, where employees air their views to their seniors confidentially. These practices go well with the Chinese culture since Chinese by and large are more comfortable opening up on a one-on-one basis.Apart from encouraging employees to contribute ideas, Intel also allows them to error without fear of penalty. Why people may not appreciate the cultural point of view of others Attitude plays an important role in appreciating diverse cultural orientation. The mindset of people may cause one to disregard others people’s cultural standings. Lack of education, may lead to the perception that others cultures are inferior due to their norms, beliefs and values. Moreover characters in a person can contribute to rigidity in accepting contribution of people from societies with a different cultural setting.Past engagement may evoke feelings of rejection especially if the relation was unhealthy. Effect of appreciating cultural diversity on ability of people to communicate effectively in an international organization Cultural diversity is the multiplicity of cultures or human societies in a certain region. Appreciating cultural diversity is vital in an organization. The cultural limitations of employees are addresses. For instance, difference in education systems means the level of expertise is different. Through training programs, effective communication may be achieved. This would in return enhance human relation among employees and between management and employees. By recognizing the cultural variation, employees respect each others values and beliefs. Recommendation on steps to take and suggestion of appropriate policies that would ensure successful expansion of Sealwrap into Asia and Europe Introduction Culture refers to the way of life that is influenced by the behaviour, knowledge, and beliefs throughout the lives of people. Multiplicity of cultures in a certain region or organization is referred to as cultur al diversity.Multinational organizations have experienced cultural challenges while expanding their business to regions that differ culturally from the country of origin. The cultural challenges include different education system of the beneficiary country. The system of education may fail to produce experts to much the job specifications. However foreign government often give incentives to multinational organization that hire local expertise. Moreover, an organization is by far acceptable if it involve local employees. Organizations often find it challenging to penetrate and operate in a foreign market due to language barrier. The difference between the organization’s official language and that of the country in which it is operating may require translators. Elsewhere, employees and managers may have to be trained. Other cultural barriers may included social inequalities and jealous, gender insensitivities, style of dress, mode of communication, national pride, religious beli ef and local customs. Organizations setting up their business across borders should appreciate cultural diversity both at the management and subordinate levels. Realizing and understanding cultures differences enhances human relation in an organization. The differences are addressed through an effective communication system. Managers understand their employees and apply the best strategy to resolve employees’ issues. As a suggestion, Sealwrap should consider involving more personnel of Asian and European when expanding their business in Asia and Europe respectively. It is advisable to involve these personnel at both the management levels and the subordinate levels. However, they must be trained accordingly. Elsewhere, in setting up the multinational in Asia, it is important to be flexible. The organization should consider allowing cultural norms that contribute positively to the organization to prevail. However these should be supplemented with professional management strategie s. Suggested policies It would be important for Sealwrap executives, especially the human resources executives, to take on policies that curtail negative elements of the Asian and European culture while maintaining the positive ones. This would help in progression of the corporate culture in the Asians and European business operations. The policies should neither allow the corporate culture in the parent company to be adopted in the subsidiary nor should the Asian culture dominate in the operation of Sealwrap. A policy to maintain a higher percentage of the local employees would improve the outlook of Sealwrap as a local company. Employees should be encouraged to contribute ideas through a policy that reward them. Besides boost the employee’s morale, the company would improve its outlook. The company could promote its business through a policy on corporate social responsibility. In conclusion, one important thing that Sealwrap could do is to set up a fair, open, and caring huma n resource system that would cater for the Asian and European cultures in their business at Asia and Europe. How an HR Practitioner should ensure the services they provide are timely and effective

With reference to the HR Practitioners role within my company i will show how we meet the customers needs in a timely and effective manner. Prensently i work for Leicestershire Police and my role as a HR Clerk mainly entails the recruitment side of things. Which also entails job fairs, seminars and marketing fairs. Additionaly to this i will do general admin duties where will answer or update employees queries, deal with the sickness line and fit notes and maintain employee records. At present we are recruiting between 200 – 250 people who are at several different stages of the process. Understanding customer needs (include examples of 3 different customers and 1 need for each, and explain how would you priotise conflicting needs) We entertain a wide variety of customers within our HR department, the 3 key users that we deal with are the external and internal candidates, employees and management. Internal and External candidatesEach recruitment selection can require different p rocesses  · to keep them updated with the whole process from start to end, i.e successfull at short listing, interview/asssement dates, have been successfull/unsuccessfull at interview, vetting medical and employment reference checks.  · provide them induction days and training if required for thyat specific role.  · For some areas of our vacancies we have a pool of candiates that would go into cohorts. How we priotise who would go in each one would be whos passed their assessments/interviews, fitness tests, how quickly other departments we work alongside would complete their side of things.Employees · Main needs would to keep thier records upto date with sickness, awards, training, change in circumstances, performance developement reviews.Management  · To keep line managers informed of new starters, what their scheldues would be, induction lists to provide the new starter and to make sure they settle into their new efficiently and to inform them if they need any additiona l help. make sure that the new candidate completes the manditoryDisplay Screen Equipment Survey (DSE) so that the they are working in a comfortable environment.  · Update managers with any sicknessesWith these main 3 customers the HR Service Centre can show that they provide a broad range of services that meet to the customers standards. We update the relavent people with the correct information but would uphold the confidentiality around sensative or personal records. Effective communication (includes examples of 3 different communication methods and the advantages and disadvantages of each) Within in the HR service centre we use several different methods of communication, the ones we find most effective in our line of work are by telephone, writing or emailing.Telephone Communication · The quickest way to contact someone is by phone, this way we are able to talk through various process and get quick confirmation from people. you would also get a sense of what the person is lik e.  · The disadvantage of using the phone is that you have no recording of what has been said or agreed to, and the full meaning/point might not get across to them.Email Communication · The benefit of emails is that it is the quickest way to keep people informed about various things and get answers back almost immediatley, tranfer details to various people at the same time. If they are internal employee/ candidates we can keep the emails restricted so they cannot be accessed from outside forces. We would also be able to keep an audit trail of what has been said or agreed to.  · Disadvantage would be that if the email is unrestricted others would be able to access it, would go to the wrong person and would not be classed as official confirmation.Written Communication · Would go directly to relavent person. More offical when sending out contracts, update letters references. Would be able to keep a copy of the letter we send out with the persons file.  · On the other hand let ters can easily be lost in the post, employees and candidtaes can claim to have not recieved it. Written communication can also take longer between replys. Effective service delivery (include: delivering service on time, delivering service on budject, dealing with difficult customers, handling and resolving complaints)All services that we provide needs to be processed in a timely manner. In the recruitng side we have a time frame of 8-12 weeks to recruitment candidates, we do have some longer to time frames for people who are in the pools. With more everyday queries we recieve generally take 24 hours to at least action if answer any questions.

How to Speak English As a Native Speaker

How to Speak English As a Native Speaker When you learn to speak English as a second language, it often seems that no matter how hard you study or how much you practice you still don’t get it quite right! There is a simple reason for this – the way we learn to speak English in an academic setting is not how native speakers actually talk! There are subtle nuances such as accent, vocabulary and grammar which make a world of difference between a native English speaker and someone who has learned English as a second language. However, there are a few helpful tricks that you can use if you want to know how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker! Why Put The Effort Into Perfecting Your English Before we get started with learning how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker let’s talk about why it is worth making the effort. For some people, knowing that you can speak the language well is enough, so why put in more time trying to sound like you have always spoken English? There are a number of benefits that come from being fluent in English. Native speakers will find it easier to understand you. If you use the same colloquialisms and accent as the local people it is going to make it much easier for them to understand you and there will be less likelihood of misunderstandings. You will feel more confident at work. If you need to speak English in a professional environment you will feel more confident if you know that you sound just like a native speaker. Get access to additional job opportunities. While we are on the topic of work, there are many jobs which require native-level English, so if you are able to master this skill you will find a whole new set of opportunities open to you. Often these jobs pay a little more too! How to Speak English Fluently If You Are Not a Native Speaker Now that we know some of the reasons why you might want to become as fluent as a native speaker, let’s get into how to achieve your goal. There are a number of great tips and tricks that you can use in your quest for how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker. #1: Familiarize Yourself with a Variety of English Accents There are so many different variations of English all over the world. In America, if you listen to a native New Yorker and someone from Texas they will sound completely different! In fact, you could be forgiven for thinking that they are speaking a different language! In the United Kingdom, the most well know accent is known as ‘Queen’s English’, but in reality, few native speakers actually sound like that! If you want to sound like a native English speaker you are going to need to choose an accent to work on! Listen to as many English accents as you can and think about what one is going to be more suitable. You probably won’t want to choose one of the extremes, instead opt for something neutral. Think about where you are likely to work or travel to narrow down your options. #2: Imitate Native Pronunciation Once you have chosen the accent that you prefer the next step in learning how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker is mastering native pronunciation. Start by watching videos and television programs featuring native English speakers. This will not only allow you to listen and mimic the pronunciation, but you can also study the mouth and lip movements of the speakers since this can also impact your pronunciation. Look on YouTube for videos which teach the lip and tongue positions for every letter and sound combination in the English language and practice in front of a mirror. We need to be honest here – this is a long and tedious process! However, it will be worth it! You need to practice repeatedly until it become muscle memory. Pay attention to sounds that don’t exist in your native tongue! #3: Use Slang Phrases When Speaking English Slang is the name given to informal words and phrases also known as colloquialisms. Native English speakers will use slang in speech, but not usually when writing. The type of slang used is going to vary by area, so think back to when choosing your accent – which area is it from? You will want to learn slang that matches your chosen accent. There are some types of slang that are universal and will be used in any area, others are more localized. Here are a few examples of common slang phrases that are quite universal: â€Å"Do you wanna hang out?† – Means ‘do you want to spend time together?’ â€Å"We had a blast at the carnival!† – Means ‘we had a great time at the carnival’ These are phrases you would not learn from formal language lessons, but rather from listening to how native speakers talk to one another. If you can master using slang you will immediately sound more like a native English speaker! #4: Learn How to Use Idioms As well as slang phrases, when listening to native English speakers you will also hear them use idioms. These are funny little phrases that probably don’t much sense to a non-native speaker. Some examples of commonly used idioms would be things like ‘in the blink of an eye’ meaning very fast or ‘it’s a piece of cake’ meaning its easy! These phrases should not be taken literally and like slang it takes learning the phrases and their meanings. It can be a good idea to keep a list of these in a notebook, so you can memorize them. Using idioms will make you sound much more natural and more like a native English speaker. These tips will help you to learn how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker. You should first learn the language and then apply these tricks to master an appropriate accent, pronunciation and use of informal language to make your speech blend in with native speakers.
